Hakuna Matata, it means no worries…. but for our Sem 2’17 members, it
also holds a special meaning to each and every one of us. It reminds us of a
time when barriers were broken and friendships were forged, a story of how
insecurities were left behind and bonds started anew, where trust was given and
cherished by the beholder. Memories of glorious hair whipping in slow Mo, the
brief reintroduction of the cake-to-face relationship, of beautiful?? bride
grooms and equally stunning brides dressed in the latest newsprint, of food
looking like the charcoal it was burnt with, of sponges sailing through the
wind, and so much more. What am I talking about?? The Sem 2’17 team Building of
course!!
Hakuna Matata!! That’s our theme. Why? That’s because our main
objective is to make our members, old and new, temporarily forget their worries
and just focus on making friends and igniting the spirit of togetherness that
has been the central idea of SCSC since the very beginning……the spirit of OHANA!!

Day 1 (3rd September 2017)
At 9 a.m., 32 of our existing members gathered at classroom EB 1-1 in
Sunway College to register for the event. They were then given 30 minutes to
mingle around while waiting for any latecomers. At 9.30, when all members were
accounted for, we explained the theme and its purpose and we moved on to a
small ice breaking session consisting of games such as:
First Impression
Captain Call
Moving Island
Of course, no team building event is complete without the birthday
celebrations for those born in the months of July, August, September, October,
November and December. Special appearance by our former alumni, Vincent Tan who
brought the cake along and will be joining us for the rest of the program.
Need I mention what follows…... a face-planting fest of course!!
Soon after a short lunch break, we were ready to begin our journey to
Farm Ville Cafe and homestay Sekinchan, a 2-hour journey spent mostly snoring
away in the bus. Our arrival was greeted by a view of lush paddy fields
stretching as far as the eye can see, a perfect place to relax…….in a team
building event? Yeah right, as if! Once we were all checked in and settled
down, the first program of the evening began.
Episode 1, Members were split
into groups of 7 per team and they had to complete 5 station games to collect
clues from each station. These clues would provide a vital hint as to who the 4
spies among them were. At the end of the three-day program, the teams would
have to find all 4 spies so the hints were quite crucial. The station games
prepared were:
Battleship
Jump Jump Tissue Box
The Kite Challenge
Ping Pong Blowout
Water Quiz
With tired but cheery smiles, our members were left to freshen up and
relax before dinner is served. Soon after that, Episode 2, the second part of
the evening began with the first activity being ‘1-word Storytelling’ with a
side of punishment by mystery flavoured
jellybean. Russian roulette anyone??
Followed by 'Guess Me Out'
Next on the list, ‘Suck it Up’
And last but not least, 'Fashion Night' where everybody's inner diva is unleashed. Ranging from things that can't be unseen to designs worthy of Ralph Lauren.
Day 2 (4th September 2017)
Breakfast kick starts the day, continued by Beyond Game trials, a
vital section of the program as the games need to be tested in the field before
the actual event. Our members, as always, are more than happy to unknowingly
volunteer themselves as test subjects to untested station games.
A short lunch break later, Episode 3 began with another round of
station games, with more hints on the spies up for grabs.
With a barbeque pit
readily available, we couldn't pass on an opportunity to have a barbeque
dinner. With a shaky beginning, success was achieved as our members were
willing to jump in and help the TB team with the barbeque pit. Truly a good
show of team spirit, the hidden objective behind the process. Absolutely
nothing to do with our lack of barbecuing experience I assure you.
The day ends with another tradition, the sharing session, where our
members share about their greatest fear and why it is so. This session serves
to give our members a platform to share something personal about themselves
that they probably have never shared with anyone else, and this undoubtedly
made them feel closer to other members.
Day 3 (5th September 2017)
Since this is our last day in Sekinchan, (also a Monday…. Monday Blues anyone??) our members
are allowed to have a bit of a lie in with breakfast starting at 10. Once
everyone is settled and full, the identity of the spies was finally revealed.
Our members are not to be underestimated as they could identify almost all the
spies, truly a feat worthy of 007. We then moved on to the souvenir giveaway.
The souvenirs serve as a note of thanks from the organising team to every member for participating in the journey
to discover that this club is more than just a club, it's a family.
Like all good things,
the event must come to an end. With bags packed and rooms cleared, we indulge
in a light photo-shoot session. Uncountable pictures were taken and innumerable
poses were given before mother nature decided enough was enough!!!, and gave us
a light shower of H2O to send us off. A fitting end for an event blessed full
of joyful memories and a little melancholy at the ending, as all good things
must come to an end.
Overall, the team building was a resounding success with our theme, Hakuna Matata, taking center stage
throughout the event. Let there be no doubt on its effectiveness as everyone
now knows anyone in the club and there are no strangers among us. With smiles all around our story ends,
another page added to the chronicles of SCSC, for it may be short, but it will
be remembered for a lifetime.
The End.
