M.A.D. CSR Event (Sem 1, 2016)

M.A.D Event (Make A Difference)
SOS

On the 20th and 21th of April, Sunway CPA Australia Student Charter (SCSC) organized a CSR event, named, Make A Difference (M.A.D). The objectives of this event are to help the students to release stress and to collect donations for Phyllis Caring home.

To encourage students to reduce stress, we have conducted stress ball tutorial, giving out lollipop and candies and also having a confession board with the title – ‘Before I Die’. The purpose of doing this is to encourage people to pursue their dreams during both their highs and lows. There were also experiential games for students to have a brief experience how handicaps feel and how they go through their daily lives.

During the event day, we had a booth to teach students on how to make a stress ball which would be helpful for them to release their stress. Thankfully, many students were interested and had spent time to participate in making stress balls. Besides, we also gave out some hand-made stress balls and invitation cards to lecturers to invite them to participate in our event. Most of the lecturers appreciated and liked the idea of stress ball.

Apart from stress ball booth, we also had confession board and gave out lollipops on both days. SCSC committee members approached students to draw a ‘Lucky Paper’ from a box around the Sunway University College study area. The paper drawn would decide whether they will get a lollipop or candy. Inspirational quotes were stick together with the lollipop and candy which would help motivate students who are stressed out with studies. It was such a wonderful experience to be able to see the smiles from students when they received candies.

The most attractive part in the event was the confession board. It has successfully attracted many people to visit our booth who had participated to write wishes and confessions on the board. We believe that everyone have a dream they would want to achieve, we hope that students would pursue their dreams with both passion and perseverance.

Donations to Phyllis Caring Home

Contributing back to the society can display great sense of responsibility and awareness of what is going on in our society. During our SOS event, we also had a donation booth where we would collect both cash donations as well as daily necessities to donate to an old folk’s home in PJ called Phyllis Caring Home. However prior to the event, we have visited the home in order to go through the things that they are lacking. After collecting sufficient amount of items and cash, we have made another round of visitation to Phyllis Caring Home to deliver and assemble the items accordingly.

We have gratefully received great responses from both students and staffs of Sunway University College. At the end of our event, we have successfully raised a total of RM1,360 and daily necessities. The items donated to the home were:

Stand Fan x 2
Rice Cooker x 1
Cutting Board x 1
5 Layer Stoker x 1
Dishwasher x 20
Toilet Cleaner x 3
Laundry Powder x 5
Mosquito Spray x 3
Curry Powder x 3
Eggs x 2 Dozens
Onion x 2 packs
Banana x 1 bunch
Corns x 3
Garlic x 1 pack
Potato x 1 pack
Papaya x 2
Jacob Biscuits x 1

It was such a great and meaningful experience to be able to give back to the society, as the great Mother Teresa once said, “It’s not how much we give but how much love we put into giving”. We would definitely visit the home again and conduct more CSR Events in the future.

Visit to Phyllis Caring Home (Sem 1, 2016)

Visit to Phyllis Caring Home

Sunway CPA Australia Student Charter had organized a visit to an old folk’s home named Phyllis Caring Home. This meaningful activity was organized to cheer up the old folks and let them feel loved as well as care from all of us. It was held on 9th of April 2016 (Saturday) from 9am until 3pm at Jalan 12/12 Petaling Jaya.

Before departing to Phyllis Caring Home on 9th of April, all SCSC members gathered at Sunway University at 9am and departed at 9.30am. There were 37 members and 12 old folks from Phyllis Caring Home during that day. Upon reaching the old folks’ home, members started their tasks which had been allocated earlier. Some members were assigned to clean up the home and others would then accompany and talk to the old folks. The old folks were very happy as there were so many of us who have visited them and they felt grateful that they can share their stories with us.

SCSC members had been busy with the preparations for this event such as planning games that were suitable for the old folks, souvenirs and entertainments to cheer them up. When the entertainments were carried out, the old folks were very excited and curious of what we had prepared for them. Members sang classic songs and played “Snake and Ladder” game with them. Everyone joined the session and the greatest part was that the old folks sang along with the members. Some of the old folks told the members that the songs had brought flashback of their past memories.

As for the foods, SCSC members decided to cook fried mee hoon, vegetables and fish ball soup for the old folks and also ordered “tau fu fa” for dessert, taking consideration of their health. During lunch time, all the old folks were anticipating the members’ home cooked food and all of them were satisfied with the food. Most of them complimented our chefs, Mudz and Yuen Jing for their great cooking skills. While having lunch together, the old folks continued to share their past stories and chatted with the members happily.

Time passed by so fast that the visitation had come to an end. We hugged the old folks and took group pictures with them as part of memories. Before that, we gave the souvenirs that we made ourselves which were paper cranes to each old folks.

In conclusion, this visitation to old folks’ home should continue to be conducted in the future to show more support to Phyllis Caring Home. This event helped to make the old folks happy and to have positive thoughts during their daily lives. “Life still goes on”, this is the reason that keeps each and every old folks live every day.
