Laser Tag

After all the educational talks, SCSC club decides to promote the club in a different perspective. Hence, laser tag competition is planned. Announcements and posters are made, ensuring the awareness of all students in the university. Students who are interested are to call Yap Zhi Ruo and Saw Sher Ying. The event is held on the 18th of May 2012 at Laser Warzone IOI mall, Puchong at the price of RM40 for 3 games. The trip is opened to public and on that day itself, everyone is gathered at the foyer in Sunway University. Clubs representatives volunteered to drive all participants to the event area. Upon arrival, briefing was given to ensure all participants focuses primarily on safety rather than fun. Teams of 2 are divided and strategies are discussed. The first 2 games are team shooting based on the overall summation of points scored by team members. While the third game is played in the objective of free for all.  The overall shooting is tremendously fun and tiring. After all 3 games, the winning team received 5 Subway coupon vouchers worth RM50. Subsequently after the match, all of the participants went for tea in Subway IOI mall. Quality time of fellowship and getting to know one another among the new friends are encouraged. The environment is filled with joy and laughter. Following that, when everyone finished their food, bags are packed and everyone leaves with a wide smile on their faces. Overall, it was a success for SCSC in organizing a competition for the first time.

The KPMG Talk: A day of intrigue
  T
he rainy clouds gathered and the bellowing grey clouds begun to gather. The cold breeze drifted in mid-air. The hustle and bustle continued at Sunway College, this had to be past lunch hour. There was an aura of optimism amongst the Sunway CPA Student Charter because they were expecting a special guest. This was none other than Ms Anita Menon. Her decorated curriculum vitae boasting an extensive background in conventional banking, commodities and financial strategy not forgetting she is the current Executive director of Financial Risk Management Services.

The crowd gathered slowly in the auditorium. At 3.30 P.M, I shot a glance at the watch and the auditorium was not even full. One of the students who made the welcoming speech was already on stage. Fiona looked calm and composed. Her deamour was that of a confident individual. Her introduction was lively and her energy seemed to rub-off the audience with smiles on their faces.
Finally, a round of applause was given to the Executive Director of Financial Risk Management. Her bright smile lit up the room. Most boys appeared to be enthusiastic compared to the girls. This was probably because of her stunning outfit. The talk begun off with a general background of the general economic crisis. The students sitting next to me where at the edge of their seats. For a moment, I thought they were going to jump off. The atmosphere in the room was jubilant; it was as if we were at a musical concert. However, things changed drastically as she suddenly started to drift onto the subject of financial instruments.

Furthermore, confusion descended upon the first year students. This is because they were not familiar with the financial jargon. The high energy of optimism seemed to vanish. They started to text their friends and Facebook. Later on, scores of people begun chatting.
Within a matter of short time, she was summing up her talk. She was done. I could almost see a sense of relief amongst the students. It was time for questions. The questions posed to her simply, she breezed through them.

Lastly, it was time for Sunway CPA Student Charter to hand over a token of appreciation to Ms Anita Menon. The usual protocol was observed of shaking hands. After that it was time for taking pictures.

Furthermore, the time for refreshments had arrived. The deafening silence was replaced with a sea of noise. Most students were chatting with each other, and very few were chatting with our speaker.

The KPMG talk was an insightful talk for most students. At the end of the day, we all learned something new. It might have been little or more than others. The fact is none of walked out the auditorium the same.

Monday, April 2, 2012

On the 23rd of March 2012, SCSC club hold a CPA (Australia) talk at Victoria University, Sunway College, KL. This talk was opened to public; those who attended the talk were mostly students from semester 1 and 2. Before the CPA talk started, the members of SCSC Club gathered at AUP office to get the CPA T-shirt and did some preparation too, so that the event will run smoothly. The representative from SCSC club had made some announcements in the classes a week before CPA talk was held, because they have to register at AUP office before attending the talk. The brochures were distributed to the students and after that, Daphne, the president of SCSC Club introduced the guest speaker to them, which was Miss Kuan from CPA Australia.

During the talk, Miss Kuan introduced CPA Australia to the students. CPA Australia is an accounting body in Australia that provides services include education, training, technical support and advocacy for locally and internationally. Meanwhile, she asked the students to fill up the form that had been distributed, it was a “CPA passport” that would allow students to get more information and working opportunities from CPA Australia. On the other hand, Ms.Kuan also showed them a video of the members from CPA Australia who worked in Adidas Company and some career opportunities when working with a CPA Australia title. The talk was very useful for the students, it gave them opportunities to know more about CPA Australia and how the career path looks like when working as an accountant, not only in accounting companies but also in other companies.

At the end of the talk, a video of SCSC Club was shown and then Yvonne, Han and Netty did a presentation to promote SCSC Club to the students, and also invite them to join the club, since SCSC Club was recruiting new members. All of them did a good job and the students looked satisfied with the presentation.

All in all, the objective of this event was to give better knowledge to students and also giving them more insight about CPA Australia. On the other hand, some improvements are needed as the members discussed in the next meeting, such as announcement of the event must be taken earlier before the event and a mini rehearsal for those who will present in the event, so that they will be more prepared and present better during the event.
