Movie Day with House of Joy

Another successful yet meaningful event organised by Sunway CPA Australia Student Charter(SCSC). In conjunction with the Stress Free Carnival held on 29th and 30th of April, the ‘Buy Ticket for Them’ booth was set up with the aim to promote the spirit of social responsibility amongst students by participating in community services and reaching out to those underprivileged kids. A total of RM1,000 was successfully raised by the SCSC members and all these money were channelled to House of Joy at Taman Paik Siong, Puchong in order to support the basic need of the orphans, in terms of shelter, food and schooling materials.

On 3rd May 2014, SCSC members brought the orphans of House of Joy for a blockbuster movie, i.e. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 at Golden Screen Cinema located at IOI Mall. A total of 26 SCSC members, 18 orphans, aged from 5 to 13-year-old, and 2 caretakers of House of Joy were involved in this event.

We reached House of Joy approximately 1pm. It was delightful to finally meet the kids and also to see the big, bright smiles on the kids’ faces which brought joys to our heart. Before getting to know more about the kids, all SCSC members were busy working like bees to transfer all the sponsored items from the bus into the orphanage house. Excitingly, the kids also gave us helping hands to move all the sponsored items as part of their gratitude. The sponsored items include Lam Soon cooking oil, FOS slippers, SAN REMO pasta sauce, noodles, NUKLEUS innerwear, VICO beverages, sanitary pads, KAO detergents and KDK fans. We would like to show our utmost gratitude to all the generous sponsors.  Not only it helped us to bring happiness to the kids but most importantly it assists the kids’ daily needs.

After all the sweat of moving all the sponsored items, we finally had time to mix around with the adorable kids. All of us mingled around with them to lessen the awkwardness between the SCSC members and the kids. We shared laughter, joke around, tell stories and etc, which clearly shows a smile on each of the kids’ faces.

After the bonding session, the kids queued up to get on the bus for the departure to IOI Mall. During the journey, most of us spent a wonderful time getting to know more one another. We shared and talked about hobbies, dreams and all the things under the sun. We had great fun and laughter. Without fail as usual, the SCSC members took selfies with the kids too!

Upon arriving IOI Mall, the kids were exicited and energetic, they all can’t wait for the show to start and to watch their superhero- Spiderman in action. Movie tickets were then swiftly distributed to the kids. Besides that, the kids were given popcorns and mineral water as complementary so that they could enjoy the movie even more.

Time passes fast, the 2-hour movie ended with no regrets. By looking at the kids’ faces, it is unquestionable that they truly enjoyed the superhero movie. Before departing back to House of Joy, everyone was with a heavy heart to say goodbye. At the end, SCSC ended the session by having a group photo session to capture the memorable moment.

Back at the orphanage house, the kids’ teary eyes tells us that they were unwilling leave us that soon. With no choice, we gave our last farewell to all the awesome kids and hoping we get to see them again one day in the future. All the funds raised at the ‘Buy Ticket for Them’ was passed to the person-in-charge of House of Joy, Ms Leshley.

Undoubtedly, that this was the best event ever organised by us throughout the semester! The reason is simple, because we learnt a valuable lesson to appreciate every moment we have and most importantly every second we spent with the kids touched their heart deeply.  “Think big, dream big, believe big and the results will be big.” Hopefully all the kids are able to achieve their dreams and we wish them all the best!

Stress Free Carnival

In conjunction with the International Stress Awareness Month in April, SCSC has organised the Stress Free Carnival to promote awareness among Sunway students. It was held on 29th and 30th of April at Energy Hub from 9.30 am to 4.00pm. The objective of this carnival is to help students to de-stress themselves from their assignments, tests and examinations. Stress is part of everyday life and it can be beneficial. However it is of great importance that students are able to identify, handle and manage their stress level accordingly. Stress Free Carnival includes the booths:

  • ‘Buy Ticket for Them’
Our objective is to bring the underprivileged children from ‘House of Joy’, which is located in Puchong, to watch the movie ‘The Amazing Spiderman 2’. The purpose is to take the orphans out to experience and watch movie in cinema, complement with popcorns and drinks. Public who are interested in this activity donated RM10, representing buying a ticket for a child.

  • Confession Board (Combat Your Stress)
It is a platform for the students to confess anything regarding to their studies and etc in order to release their tension.

  • Game Booth - ‘Slap the Book’ (Compliment and Congratulate Yourself)
This is a Free of Charge game whereby participants just have to hit the books on the tables in order to flip over the coins to win a Chupa Chups lollipop for themselves. The participants were having a great fun to unwind themselves.

  • Food Sales Booth (Relax and Recharge)
We sell fried ice-cream and banana chocolates with cornflakes, colour rice or almonds as toppings. The fried ice-cream comes in 2 flavours which are Yam and Chocolate. The desserts were yummy and delicious. Most patrons were totally indulged with the hot seller- fried ice-cream.

On 30th of April, 123Cheese which is a mobile photo booth company came in and joined us at this carnival. Their colourful backdrops and funky props attracted the crowds to post and take pictures. This photo booth has certainly allowed the students to capture their memorable moments at university with their buddies and friends.

Overall, the carnival was a great success and SCSC obtained positive responses from the Sunway students. It is an honour for SCSC to organise such event to help out the students to release their stress. Everyone has great fun, food and laughter where the objective of the event is achieved. SCSC would like to take this opportunity to thank all the participants for their generous support to make this event a successful one.

Thank you very muchie! =)

Industrial Visit to Leaderonomics

On the 21st March 2014, Sunway CPA Australia Student Charter (SCSC) had successfully organised an industrial visit for Sunway students to Leaderonomics. The SCSC members had devoted a lot of effort in ensuring that this event will run smoothly. Besides that, special thanks to Leaderonomics for their cooperation as well as their generosity for hosting this visit.

Leaderonomics is a social enterprise with a sole purpose of transforming nations through leadership development. Their vision is to seek to nurture people into leaders, develop affectionate communities, and transform human societies. It is centred on helping everyone to build their leadership capabilities and helping them to grow into community leaders that make a difference in the world. They strongly believe that leadership will help transform communities and societies into a better, fairer and more caring society.
Address: Suite 9.08 & 9.09, Block E, Phileo Damansara 1, 9 Jalan 16/11, 46350 PJ
Phone: 03-79575809/5804
Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Leaderonomics?fref=ts

During the visit, Leaderonomics welcomed us with joyful arms and led us to their main office. The staff-in-charge, Ms Nadia guided us around their office for a tour to which the participants were fascinated about the office’s surroundings and atmosphere of the other staff members doing their work. Furthermore, the speakers of this company, Mr Andrew Lau and Ms Ang Hui Ming generously provided the students with many helpful information and knowledge about their victorious company.

After the short briefing, Leaderonomics has  kindly prepared a satisfying lunch, i.e. Domino’s Pizza for us to fill our tummies. After lunch, some special activities was arranged for us and we were then broken down into groups. One of the activities was a task given on how to secure sponsorship to fund our projects to be carried out for the youths in Leaderonomics’ Community Centre. All of us truly enjoyed the games and had a good time in brainstorming the ideas. The activities has certainly amplified students’ soft skills such as communication skills, conflict resolution, strategic thinking, team building, creative problem solving and etc. At the end of the visit, SCSC (along with our dearest lecturer, Ms Anita) presented a basket of fruits as a token of appreciation to the head manager of Leaderonomics, Mr Andrew Lau.

In conclusion, the objective of this field trip was achieved, i.e. to provide Sunway students with an insight knowledge of the business world. Positive feedbacks were given by majority of the participants while negative feedback was noted down to improve our next industrial visit. Once again, SCSC would like to thank Leaderonomics for this knowledgeable and yet memorable visit; and of course, not forgetting our supportive participants who have been very sporting in this visit. :)
