Great Eastern Industrial Visit (Sem 1, 2015)

On the 27th of March, Sunway CPA Australia Student Charter (SCSC) organized an industrial visit for Sunway students to Great Eastern Insurance Company. We departed from Sunway University at 1.20 pm and reached Menara Great Eastern in Jalan Ampang at 2.30 pm.

Great Eastern is the top insurance company in Malaysia. It was established in 1908. Great Eastern’s slogan is ‘Life is Great’. To date, Great Eastern has 21 operational branch offices. Their products include life insurance plans, investment-linked plans, mortgage protection, business protection, employee benefits, medical insurance and group health benefit schemes. Great Eastern Life Assurance (Malaysia) Berhad is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Great Eastern Holdings Limited (GEH) and its ultimate holding company is Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation Limited (OCBC).

When we arrived at the Menara Great Eastern, they welcomed us and led us to the Auditorium 2 for registration. The seminar then started with Mr. Dennis introducing Great Eastern, followed by the second speaker who briefed us about the history of Great Eastern. The following speaker,
Mr. Alex showed us the marketing side of Great Eastern. After the introduction session there were question and answer session. Prizes were given for those of us who were able to answer the questions. The Q and A session was very well received.

After the seminar we were led to the cafeteria for tea break. Varieties of food were served specially for us. Our industrial visit ended soon after our tea break. We conveyed our appreciation and bid goodbye to the Great Eastern team for their hospitality and thanked everyone from Great Eastern for making our visit a meaningful one. Finally we left Great Eastern building and made our way home around 5.30 pm.

All of us agreed and concluded that we have met the objective of the industrial visit. Sunway students now have a more in-depth knowledge as to the working environment in Great Eastern. We believed these invaluable knowledge has enable to more or less visualize the working environment in the corporate world. Overall, the industrial visit to Great Eastern was a great experience and we noted the areas of improvement needed. Once again, we would like to thank Great Eastern for such an exciting and memorable trip. We would also like to thank all 58 participants.

Baker Tilly Industrial Visit (Sem 1, 2015)

Our main objective to this visit is to enhance our knowledge on the corporate world. We believe that Baker Tilly Company is capable to provide us with the required information, which will enable us to understand the functional systems and work procedures in the organization. Also the visit provides good opportunities for students to understand the management of Baker Tilly in terms of auditing and human resource.

The visit was organized by SCSC on 13th March 2015. A total of 41 participants including 3 SCSC members led by our lecturer Miss Fong visited Baker Tilly Monteiro Heng (Baker Tilly). The team gathered at the foyer in front of the Information Centre around 1.00 pm.

Attendance was taken followed by group photos before we depart to the destination located in Bangsar South City, Kuala Lumpur at 2.30 pm. Upon our arrival we were greeted by representatives of Baker Tilly then ushered to the main office. We were seated in a room filled with goodie bags.

We were welcome with an opening speech by one of the Director of Baker Tilly. The speech includes a brief history and background of Baker Tilly. According to the Director Baker Tilly is the 6th largest accountancy and business advisory firm in Malaysia. Established since 1978, they have continuously built Baker Tilly on their core values of Professional Integrity and Innovation. The mission of the company is to bring world-class capabilities with local understanding when serving their clients from diverse industries.  They aim to exceed every client’s expectation with their unflinching commitment to excellence and to achieve their goal of becoming the preferred choice among clients and young talents. Baker Tilly mainly provides services on audit and assurance, tax and advisory, corporate advisory, forensics and investigation, corporate recovery, restructuring, and insolvency management.

The informative briefing was followed by an interesting Q and A session. We were then divided into two groups and each consists of 20 people who were then led by the staff of Baker Tilly for a company tour. The tour started at the Auditing department. Information as to the function of an audit staff was shared with us. We also had the opportunity to meet the partners of the company. We then adjourned to the Advisory Department to understand the culture of the company. From our observation the culture and outlook of both departments bears no resemblance. While the Auditing Department appears serious and stressful however the Advisory Department seems lively and noisy. A point worth noting by all of us!

After the tour sessions all of us gained better understanding and knowledge as to the functions of an auditing firm. Light refreshment was served after the tour.

Our visit ended with a fruit basket presented by our lecturer to the representative of Baker Tilly as a token of appreciation. We headed back by coach and arrived at Sunway University around
5.45 pm.

All of us were grateful that we had given the opportunity to visit Baker Tilly. Our knowledge gathered during the visit to one of the biggest auditing firm in Malaysia will be put into good use.
